Retina Associates of Kentucky's physicians and staff diagnose and treat many retina disorders, with specialization in retina detachments, macular degeneration, diabetes-related conditions and histoplasmosis. Retina Associates of Kentucky Research Division engages in research studies on national and international levels, working in collaboration with other research centers such as the National Eye Institute. What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

Retina Associates of Kentucky’s Macular Degeneration Institute invites you to join us in raising awareness for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) during the month of February. February is AMD Awareness month and as one of the leading causes in blindness for people over 50 we are encouraging early detection. With early detection new treatments offer much hope for preservation of vision. Our Macular Degeneration Institute physicians are dedicated to being a part of evolving treatments by engaging in meaningful, cutting edge research.

What are common risk factors that can contribute to a persons risk of developing AMD?
Age – 50+
Smoking – Smoking doubles the risk of developing AMD.
Cardiovascular Diseases may contribute – high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, and coronary artery disease
Family History – If you have a family member who has the disease, you could be at higher risk.
Nutrients – Diet deficient in green leafy vegetables, broccoli, or fish contributes to aging and the progression of AMD.
Eye Color – Light colored eyes tend to be a greater risk than dark eye color
Ethnicity – Caucasians are more susceptible to AMD than are members of any other ethnic group.
Obesity – AMD is more likely to progress in severely overweight patients.
Gender – Women n are more likely to develop AMD than men.
You can help save your vision by smoking cessation, proper nutrition and weight control.

What are the early warning symptoms?
Early warning symptoms of AMD:
-General haziness or blurriness of vision
-Need for bright illumination when reading
-Blurred or blind spot in the center of vision
-Wavy or crooked appearance of straight lines
-Rapid loss of central vision
-Inability to recognize faces at a distance
-Loss of color vibrancy or ability to distinguish between colors
