Simpson Dental Associates FAQ

Dental MythBusters: MythBuster #1- A dental filling will last forever
Unfortunately they do not last forever. Just like other medical devices, like artificial joints or pacemakers, fillings need to be replaced. Depending on what material the filling is determines the time frame. The silver amalgam fillings start to look dark around them when they need to be replaced. The white composite fillings start to wash out and discolor when they are leaking. The better material to use would be a porcelain or gold material.

Mythbuster #2- You can't get a cavity under a crown
You can get a cavity under a crown where the crown meets the tooth at that margin it is still susceptible to decay. For a cavity to form you need three things, the tooth, the bacteria that causes cavities and food for them to eat (plaque). If you are not keeping your teeth clean along the gum line you can get decay around the crowns or if you have a dry mouth from taking medications, you will be more likely to get cavities. And once you have one cavity it can spread from tooth to tooth.

Mythbuster #3- Pregnant women shouldn't visit the dentist
Actually when you are pregnant it is very important to see the dentist and keep up with good oral hygiene. Because of all the hormaonal changes with pregnancy you are more likely to develop gingivitis or inflammation of the gum tissues. Pregnancy gingivitis affects 50-75% of expecting mothers in the US and untreated gum problems are linked to preterm low weight babies. Of course cosmetic or elective dental procedures are postponed till after the pregnancy.

Mythbuster #4- You shouldn't have an infected tooth pulled
The tooth is the source of the infection and it needs to be treated. Once a tooth has abscessed it either needs treated with a root canal to save it or taken out. If you just take a round of antibiotics it may help to decrease some of infection, but once you are done with the antibiotic the pain will come right back. So it is best to have the tooth treated even if it is infected and then take the round of antibiotics once it is treated. If the infection is not taken care of it can get in your blood stream and cause a heart infection, a stroke or other serious health conditions.

Mythbuster #5- Diet soda is better for my teeth
Diet soda is only marginally less destructive to your teeth than regular soda. Frequent, daily consumption of either diet soda or regular soda will significantly increase the likelihood of dental cavities. There might not be as much sugar in the diet soda, but it is still very acidic and by changing the PH of your mouth that is what makes the teeth weaker. So it's best to drink water or have the sugary/acidic drink with meals when you can brush or rinse your mouth out afterwards.
