What is the definition of obesity in children?
It's not the same as the definition for adults because kids are growing, boys & girls grow differently, etc. So we have to use percentiles or curves. 85-95 percentile is "overweight" & greater than the 95 percentile is "obese".
How prevalent is childhood obesity in the US and in the tristate area?
Nationwide, 17% of kids 2-19 years old are obese. The rate is highest in teens 12-19 years old and its 20% of that age group. So 1 in 5 teens are obese. Here in our area the rate of obese & overweight children is greater than 30% in WV, KY and OH.
Why as this problem grown so much, because it is nearly doubled in the last 2 decades, right?
Limited access to healthy foods - fast foods, processed foods are cheaper and more convenient. Schools are offering these unhealthy options as well. Growing lack of physical activity at school and home. Average "screen time" for 8-18 years old is reported at 7.5 hours a day and recommended is less than 2 hours.
